PHOENIX – A portion of Interstate 17 in the northern part of metro Phoenix was shut down Monday afternoon for more than three hours because of a fatal wreck, authorities said.

The crash involved a tanker truck and an SUV on the northbound side of the freeway, according to the Arizona Department of Public Safety.

It occurred south of Anthem Way, near milepost 229, around 12:30 p.m., the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

The freeway reopened around 4 p.m.

Northbound traffic was forced to exit at Daisy Mountain Drive in Anthem during the closure. Southbound I-17 was not affected.

There was no estimated time for reopening.
