PHOENIX — Phoenix announced it would open 14 city pools later this month for the summer season, with a majority allowing youth to cool off for free.
People can take their first dip of the season at a city pool beginning on May 28 at the following locations:
- Coronado Pool, 1717 N 12th Street
- Cortez Pool, 3434 W Dunlap Avenue
- Deer Valley Pool, 19400 N. 19th Avenue
- El Prado Pool, 6428 S. 19th Avenue
- Encanto Pool, 2125 N. 15th Avenue
- Harmon Pool, 1425 S. 5th Avenue
- Hermoso Pool, 5749 S. 20th Street
- Maryvale Pool, 4444 N. 51st Avenue
- Paradise Valley Pool, 17648 N. 40th Street
- Pecos Pool, 17010 S. 48th Street
- Perry Pool, 3131 E. Windsor Avenue
- Roosevelt Pool, 6246 S. 7th Street
- Starlight Pool, 7810 W. Osborn Road
- Sunnyslope Pool, 301 Dunlap Road
All pools will be available over Memorial Day weekend and then six days a week June 4-July 31 (closed on Fridays). Select pools — Cortez, El Prado, Encanto, Harmon, Maryvale, Paradise Valley, Perry and Sunnyslope — continue operating on weekends through Labor Day. Hours at each of the pools can be viewed online.
Kids age 17 and under can swim for free at Sunnyslope, Deer Valley, Maryvale, Harmon, Encanto, Perry, Starlight, Coronado, Roosevelt, Hermoso and El Prado as part of the Kool Kids Pool program. Adults can swim for $3, while seniors age 60 and over can take a dip for $1.
The city is also offering swim lessons for children age six months to 12 years old. Registration begins at noon on May 12 and lessons are split up into four sessions. Options begin in early June and are available until late July.
The number of pools opening for the summer is only half of the city’s 29 locations.
After all locations were shuttered in summer 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the city said only 12 city pools opened last year due to a significant decline in lifeguard staffing.
The city in March was looking to hire hundreds of lifeguards for this summer and offered a $2,500 incentive for those who completed the season.
