PHOENIX — Phoenix police shot a man on Sunday who advanced on an officer with a machete, authorities said.

The incident occurred around noon near 19th Avenue and Alta Vista Road when police at a nearby gas station on an unrelated call noticed the man in a dirt field waving the machete and screaming, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press conference.

Officers tried to talk to the man, who proceeded to walk into the roadway amongst vehicles, police said.

One of the officers commanded the man, who was yelling in Spanish, to drop the machete before shooting him with stungun bean bags.

The man began to advance on the officer and was shot several times, getting hit in the leg at least once, police said.

Officers moved the machete away from the man and began providing first aid.

The man was taken to the hospital in critical condition but has since been stabilized, authorities said.

Police closed 19th Avenue from Southern Avenue to Alta Vista Road for hours.

Nobody else was injured, authorities said.

No additional information was available.

It was the ninth shooting of the year by Phoenix police and 19th overall by law enforcement in the Valley, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
