PHOENIX — Banner Health broke ground Wednesday on a $54 million sports medicine center in Scottsdale that will provide various services and specialists for athletes at one location.

The three-story, 80,000-square-foot facility is slated to open in 2023 along Loop 101 at Indian Bend Road/Talking Stick Way on Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community land.

It will serve athletes of all levels from youth to professionals, the state’s largest health care network said in a press release.

“This center will give us the ability to reach a diverse population of people who participate in sports, not only in Arizona, but across the country,” Quentin P. Smith Jr., chairman of the Banner Health Board of Directors, said in the release.

“A significant philanthropic component of this project will help ensure that young people across the state will have equal opportunity to fulfill their athletic aspirations.”

Among the services to be offered at the center include orthopedic surgery, primary care sports medicine, concussion care, physical therapy, performance assessment and training, as well as sports nutrition and psychology.

The sports medicine center will also have a biomechanics lab, which uses motion-capture technology to analyze movement.

“Motion-capture technology will allow real-time analysis of athletic performance for athletes in all sports, including baseball, golf, basketball, volleyball and for runners using a state-of-the-art treadmill,” Dr. Evan Lederman, chief of sports medicine at Banner Health, said in the release.

Banner Health said the center is in alignment with its partnerships with local sports teams, including the Phoenix Suns and Mercury, Arizona Diamondbacks and Coyotes.

“Having partners that bring the best care to bear on our athletes gives us a competitive advantage,” Jason Rowley, president and CEO of the Phoenix Suns, said in the release.

“When we look at the facility Banner is developing here, it’s nothing short of amazing. We know first-hand what having a first-class, world-class facility can do for you.”

We want to hear from you.
