PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey on Tuesday appointed a college sophomore to a student regent position on the board that governs the state’s university system.

Katelyn Rees from the University of Arizona joins Rachel Kanyur, who was appointed in 2021, as the Arizona Board of Regents two student regents, according to a press release.

Student regents observe and ask questions pertinent to the student community in their first year and transition to casting votes in their second year on a variety of policies, which could have an effect on the student experience.

She will also be tasked with learning about board procedures and about university operations.

“As a proud Arizona native and University of Arizona student, becoming the next student regent is the highest honor and a great responsibility,” Rees said.

“In assuming this leadership role, I look forward to learning the details of what makes Arizona higher education successful and to positively progressing our universities.”

Rees is double majoring in mechanical engineering and computer sciences and active in school organizations, such as the Chi Omega Sorority, while maintaining a 4.0 GPA.

“Katelyn is a dynamic and driven student leader,” Ducey said. “She is an influential member of many university programs and community organizations, and I’m sure her achievements will only continue to grow.”

“As the Board of Regents’ newest member, Katelyn has the skills and experience to represent Arizona’s university students in this critically important role.”
