PHOENIX — Phoenix police are in the early stages of a homicide investigation after a woman was found dead and a man was hospitalized on Friday night.

Officers responded to an underpass near Interstate 17 and Cactus Road around 6:30 p.m. and found two people “suffering from gunshot wounds,” Phoenix police said in a press release.

The pair were beneath the underpass when they entered into a confrontation with two suspects. One suspect shot at both the victims, then fled the scene.

The woman, Nissa Thomas, 35, and the man, 31, who authorities didn’t identify, were taken to a nearby hospital.

Thomas died from her injuries at the hospital, while the man is expected to survive, the release said.

The suspects are described as black adults, ranging from 20-to-25-years-old, both about 6-feet tall and weighing 160 pounds. One wore a black t-shirt, black pants, a gray mask and tank boots, while the other was wearing a white t-shirt and blue pants with white stripe.

Anyone with information is asked to call the Phoenix Police Department at (602) 262-6151 or Silent Witness at (480) WITNESS to remain anonymous.

Silent Witness is offering up to a $2,000 reward for information leading to an arrest.

No other information was immediately available.

EDITOR’S NOTE: A previous version of this story reported the male was 32.
