PHOENIX – One person was killed and another injured Tuesday night after a vehicle hit them as they crossed a street in Mesa, authorities said.

The Mesa Police Department said Aaron Conger, 40, was fatally struck by a westbound car as he and a woman were walking near Main Street and Dobson Road around 9 p.m.

Conger tripped as they stepped across light rail tracks and fell to the street. As the woman helped him to his feet, one car narrowly missed them but a second car hit them.

First responders pronounced Conger dead at the scene while the woman, whose name was not released, was taken to the hospital with injuries that weren’t life-threatening.

Police said the driver remained at the site to answer questions and depending on the results of a toxicology report could face impairment charges.

The area was shut down for the investigation until shortly after 1 a.m. on Wednesday.
