PHOENIX — The Phoenix Theatre Company this week announced the lineup for its 2022-23 season, which is set to get underway at the end of August and feature nine shows.

The performances will take place at the orginization’s multi-venue campus at the corner of Central Avenue and McDowell Road in downtown Phoenix.

Season tickets go on sale to the general public on May 23, with single tickets becoming available on July 11.

“Our spectacular 103rd season is full of enchanting stories of possibility, tomorrow’s promise and a passionate love for the theatre,” Michael Barnard, producing artistic director at The Phoenix Theatre Company, said in a press release.

“Commemorating our perseverance over the last few years and embracing the future growth at The Phoenix Theatre Company is our goal. The ambitious lineup of full-scale productions will provide beautiful, shared experiences of laughter, tears and inspiration while capturing our commitment to artistic excellence.”

A story that sheds new light on Shakespeare begins the season at the Hormel Theatre with “The Book of Will” from Aug. 31 to Sept. 25.

A string of musicals will then take the spotlight, beginning with “Bandstand” from Sept. 21 to Oct. 23 and followed by “A Chorus Line” (Oct. 19 – Dec. 18), “Cinderella” (Nov. 16 – Jan. 1, 2023) and “An American In Paris” (Jan. 25 – Mar. 12).

“Bandstand,” “Cinderella” and “An American In Paris” will take place at the Mainstage Theatre, while “A Chorus Line” will be performed at the Hormel Theatre.

The only show of the season at Judith Hardes Theatre follows with “Constellations,” taking place from Mar. 1 – April 30, 2023.

The world premiere of the musical “Tiananme” is next on the Mainstage Theatre from April 12 – May 14, 2023, followed by a musical from June 7 to July 9 that will be announced by the organization soon.

Phoenix Theatre Company wraps its season with the musical “Dreamgirls” from Aug. 2 – Sept. 3, 2023.

A full description of the shows can be found online.

The organization is also set to host the 25th Festival of New American Theatre next spring.

“A Chorus Line” will be the last show of the season at the Hormel Theatre before it undergoes a renovation that will expand the venue from 250 seats to 500, bring a full fly loft, below-stage traps, a stage large enough to accommodate pre-Broadway show development and other technical improvements.

The renovation is part of the final phase of Phoenix Theatre Company’s $20 million capital campaign.

“We have a strong reputation for excellence among national producers and playwrights, and we field multiple serious inquiries from Broadway producers every season about our capacity to bring pre-Broadway development investment to Arizona,” Vincent VanVleet, executive director of Phoenix Theatre Company, said.

“This project will make us more competitive in attracting these development projects, which has the potential to bring millions into the local economy. We recently had to turn down two Broadway producers because our Mainstage and Hormel theatres currently lack important technical capabilities, which we estimate has cost the community more than $1 million in potential economic impact.”

The campaign is also facilitating the creation of an arts innovation and training wing to support community service programs, as well as fund improvements to the Hardes Theatre complex.
