Litter of 7 puppies rescued from house fire in Glendale

PHOENIX — A mother dog and her litter of seven puppies were rescued from a burning home by police officers in Glendale just before 2 a.m. Monday morning.

The Glendale Fire Department and police officers responded to the house fire near 27th Avenue and Rose Lane where neighbors alerted them of the puppies inside the garage, according to a press release.

An officer used a shovel he found to pry open the garage door, which freed the mother. The puppies — believed to be husky mixes — were shrieking mere feet away from the open flames when an officer stuffed them into a dog bowl to transport them out of the home.

The mother reunited with her puppies outside and the family of dogs was taken to a neighbor’s house as the fire department dealt with the blaze.

One of the puppies was treated with an oxygen mask as it was struggling with the smoke inhalation. The dogs were taken to Arizona Veterinary Emergency and Critical Care Center in Peoria for smoke inhiation treatment, according to the release.

Two other adult dogs were safely in the backyard during the fire.

Three people were displaced as a result of the incident.

The Glendale Fire Department stresses the danger of running into a burning building and recommends the general public never do so.
