PHOENIX — A man injured in a shooting in Buckeye last month has died and the suspect faces multiple charges including first-degree homicide, authorities said Sunday.

Jose Esteban Mendoza was booked into the Maricopa County Jail on March 25 in the shooting of 23-year-old Brian Herman Ceccon Gonzi, the Buckeye Police Department said in a press release.

Buckeye police said Gonzi died from his injuries on Friday and Mendoza’s bond was placed at $2 million.

The incident occurred on March 22 around 7 p.m. when Gonzi allegedly intervened in an argument between Mendoza and his girlfriend while the three were in a car, resulting in a fight between the two men.

After the three drove to a home near Yuma Road and Jackrabbit Trail, police said Mendoza retrieved a gun from the residence and shot Gonzi.

Mendoza fled in a 2015 black Dodge Charger SXT before police arrived, authorities said.

He was found in Tucson by Buckeye police with the assistance of the U.S. Marshals Service.
