PHOENIX — A new one-mile stretch of State Route 24 (Gateway Freeway) between Ellsworth and Williams Field roads in Mesa is scheduled to open on Friday, the Arizona Department of Transportation announced on Thursday.
The segment of the highway will improve access to new sports and entertainment facility Bell Bank Park, according to a press release.
The opening is several months ahead of schedule as part of ADOT’s ongoing highway project in the southeast Valley.
Construction on a four-lane divided roadway — two lanes in each direction — on State Route 24 between Ellsworth Road in Mesa and Ironwood Drive in Pinal County began in November 2020. The $77 million, five-mile segment is scheduled to open in its entirety by late summer, according to the release.
On- and off-ramps on the east side of the Ellsworth Road interchange are set to open in the next week. Crews have already added highway bridges over Ellsworth Road.
Other project elements include a drainage channel along the north side of the route, signage, traffic lights, lighting and pavement markings, according to ADOT.
Traffic on State Route 24 won’t be allowed east of Williams Field Road until the project construction is concluded.
