Fujifilm completes $88M expansion of Mesa semiconductor facility

Mar 31, 2022, 12:00 PM

PHOENIX — Electronic materials company Fujifilm announced Wednesday it has completed an $88 million expansion of its semiconductor facility in southeast Mesa.

Five new buildings were added as part of the 80,000-square-foot expansion, according to a press release, which will increase the company’s manufacturing capacity by 30%.

The company also announced it plans to add 120 new jobs over the next two years in chemistry, engineering, manufacturing, warehousing and maintenance. Around 400 employees currently work at the facility, the company said.

“These past two years have shown us just how vital semiconductor chips are to our daily lives,” Dr. Brian O’Donnelly, president and chief executive officer of the company, said in the release.

“We are proud that we had the foresight to expand our operations here in Mesa to support our semiconductor manufacturing customers to enable the rapid advancement of our digital society. Our business is growing rapidly and with this expansion we are hiring talented and skilled employees that will help us support the evolving needs of the semiconductor and electronic materials market.”

Construction was completed in 2021, with manufacturing of the company’s products that make, clean and polish semiconductor chips coming online earlier this year.

The expansion also included an operations lab with tools to develop materials for semiconductors, warehouse space, as well as a new cafeteria and a free fitness center for employees.

“Fujifilm has been a corporate partner and employer in Mesa for over 25 years, and we are thrilled that they continue to invest in our city,” Mayor John Giles said in the release.

“This expansion brings meaningful career opportunities for our residents with the chance to make an impact on the global semiconductor industry.”

Fujifilm also has manufacturing labs in Rhode Island, California and Texas, the company said.
