PHOENIX – A suburban Phoenix city is now accepting cryptocurrency as a payment option when settling up utility bills.

Chandler officials announced the move Wednesday. Residents can pay with Bitcoin, Ethereum or Litecoin via PayPal.

The option only works if there is enough currency to pay the bill. The East Valley city chose a third-party processor that it already works with for online utility payments.

Invoice Cloud handles the conversion of the cryptocurrency payment and then sends Chandler the value of the payment in dollars, the city explained.

“It’s about customer service for our residents,” Councilman Mark Stewart said a press release.

“Digital currency and blockchain is advancing quickly … we feel it is important to be on the forefront of this technology and offer it to our residents as a payment method for utility payments and other fees.”

Chandler officials believe it is among the first cities in the Valley to allow cryptocurrency as a payment choice.

About 250,000 people live in Chandler.

Last fall, the city was the first in the state to test blockchain technology for mobile voting.

The mock election ran for most of November and votes were tabulated Dec. 1.
