PHOENIX — A 19-year-old man was arrested Thursday after he allegedly fatally stabbed a friend following a dispute over money and shoes at a Phoenix homeless shelter, authorities said.

Andrew Jackson allegedly initially stabbed 20-year-old Armani Meyers between two and six times in his upper body at about 1:55 p.m. at the Central Arizona Shelter Services facility located near 12th Avenue and Madison Street, according to arrest documents.

Meyers attempted to flee from Jackson, but collapsed in the courtyard and was stabbed six more times by Jackson before he was detained by security guards, police said.

Meyers was taken to a hospital and pronounced dead at about 2:25 p.m., according to police.

Jackson was taken into custody by Phoenix police officers without incident.

A witness said the two men got into a physical altercation when the initial stabbing occurred, police said.

Another witness said Jackson and Meyers got into an argument about two hours before the stabbing, with Jackson saying he’d kill Meyers if he didn’t give him his money, police said.

Jackson told investigators he and Meyers became friends in jail and maintained a relationship after they were released.

Jackson was booked into Maricopa County Jail on one count of first-degree murder.

He is being held on $1 million bond and is next scheduled to appear in court on March 31.
