PHOENIX — There were more DUI arrests over the St. Patrick’s Day holiday in Arizona this year than in each of the past two years, the Arizona Governor’s Office of Highway Safety said Monday.

On Wednesday and Thursday, 254 people were arrested on suspicion of driving under the influence.

There were also 68 people who were cited for extreme DUI, meaning they had a blood alcohol content of .15 or higher.

The average known BAC of those arrested over the holiday this year was 0.151, the same as last year. The legal BAC in Arizona is 0.08.

During the holiday in 2021 that spanned the same time period, 197 people were arrested for DUI and 47 more were cited for extreme DUI.

The holiday in 2020, which was impacted by the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic, had 64 people arrested for DUI with three additional people being cited for extreme DUI.

It was also noted that 82 people were arrested for driving under the influence of drugs this year, up from 67 in 2021 and 33 in 2020.

Law enforcement conducted a total of 5,560 traffic stops compared to 5,809 in 2021. Officers made 3,239 traffic stops over the holiday in 2020.
