PHOENIX — Arizona’s pandemic czar said Thursday he’s still concerned about COVID vaccination rates in the state, even as case counts and hospital inpatient totals continue to decrease.
Dr. Richard Carmona told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Mike Broomhead Show that he’s seen some progress in vaccination totals, but with 60% of Arizona adults yet to receive a booster, there’s room for improvement.
“I mean, I think I’d say we’re doing better but I’m still a little concerned … I’ve seen some increases and improvements but we still have a way to go,” Carmona said.
Even with lowering case totals, Carmona’s push for vaccines — notably boosters — is centered around better protection for the elderly and children.
Only about 31% of children have received at least one shot of the vaccine in Arizona, according to Carmona.
“I will take this opportunity to please encourage all parents get your kids vaccinated,” Carmona said. “It’s not only helping them, it’s helping to stop the spread of disease in the community.”
Carmona added that better vaccination rates will help keep Arizona trending in the right direction.
Wednesday’s weekly report of 5,153 new cases, about 736 per day, was 21% smaller than last week’s update. Percent positivity reached 3%, the lowest rate since the start of the pandemic.
COVID inpatient and ICU hospitalizations also each dropped to their lowest levels since the first week of July 2021.
“You need to get your vaccines and get your boosters,” Carmona said. “Each case is individual, but for most cases we strongly suggest you get fully vaccinated and get your boosters.”
