PHOENIX – One person was killed in a fiery single-car crash on a metro Phoenix freeway early Tuesday, authorities said.

Westbound Loop 202 Santan Freeway in the southeast Valley was closed at the juncture with Interstate 10 around 3:15 a.m. and reopened by 6 a.m., the Arizona Department of Transportation said.

The driver of a 2008 Toyota Avalon was unable to get out of the car after smashing head-on into a crash cushion in the gore point, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said in an email.

The car burst into flames on impact, DPS said.

The unidentified driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

No other details were made available.
