PHOENIX – A 2-year-old boy who was hospitalized in extremely critical condition after a backyard pool drowning incident in Phoenix has died, authorities said Tuesday.

The boy was unconscious and wasn’t breathing when crews responded Monday morning to a residence near 48th Street between Southern and Baseline roads, the Phoenix Fire Department said.

Firefighters performed lifesaving techniques before taking the child to a hospital.

The family told first responders they weren’t sure how long the toddler had been in the pool.

The Phoenix Police Department said Tuesday there were no signs of foul play in the fatal drowning.

No other information was available.
