Man charged in February shooting of Indianapolis officer

INDIANAPOLIS (AP) — A man accused of shooting an Indianapolis police officer in the neck last month during a shootout was charged Tuesday with attempted murder and resisting law enforcement, authorities said.

Mylik Hill, 31, faces two counts of attempted murder, six counts of resisting law enforcement and one count each of criminal mischief and unlawful possession of a firearm by a violent felon, the Marion County Prosecutor’s Office said.

Court records do not list an attorney for Hill, whose initial hearing has not yet been scheduled.

The charges stem from a Feb. 27 shootout that seriously wounded first-year Indianapolis Metropolitan Police Officer Thomas Mangan and Hill, both of whom remain hospitalized.

Mangan was shot as officers were responding to the scene of a car crash in Indianapolis’ Fountain Square neighborhood. Authorities said Hill fled on foot and allegedly opened fire after ignoring police commands to stop and show his hands.

Prosecutor Ryan Mears said Hill faces one count of attempted murder for allegedly shooting Mangan and a second count for allegedly shooting at a second officer who had returned fire but was not wounded.

Mangan was shot in the neck and suffered “significant damage” to his voice box and Adam’s apple, law enforcement officials said.

IMPD Chief Randal Taylor said he has visited Mangan, who is married, in the hospital and described him as being in “great spirits” even though he is facing a long recovery.

“This is not going to be a short recovery unfortunately, but his spirit is right,” he said.

After the shooting, Hill had been held on theft and resisting law enforcement charges stemming from a Jan. 31, 2022 incident in which he allegedly stole nearly $1,000 in clothes and electronics from a Walmart store, The Indianapolis Star reported.
