PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department released new footage Friday of an incident earlier this month that left two dead and injured nine officers.
The critical incident video (WARNING: Graphic content) of the Feb. 11 events provide more information of the encounter and eventual ambush of officers by 36-year-old Morris Jones, who can be seen shooting police.
The footage shows the moments leading up to when Jones shot at the first responding police officer, followed by the first shots fired at Jones by the second responding police officer shortly after his attack. There was no audio in the second officers’ body camera footage because it’s part of a 30-second buffer, police said.
Less than half an hour later, the video shows a police helicopter flying above Jones’ home. Viewers can hear shots in the footage, which police say was Jones firing at the helicopter from his backyard.
Minutes after, the garage door in Jones’ home could be seen opening, with Jones attempting to make an escape. A police vehicle parked in front of the garage deterred him from leaving.
Video captured by a videographer, and later obtained by the Phoenix Police Department, showed Shatifah Lobley’s brother setting a baby outside the front door, while slowly walking toward officers with his hands in the air and back turned in their direction.
Jones and Lobley shared a child together, and she was held inside the home while suffering from a wound, police said.
As officers approached the door to take the baby, Jones fired bullets at them.
Several nearby officers and Lobley’s brother were hit with bullet fragments that ricocheted off the ground, police said.
Shots could be heard in another video from an officer firing at Jones in response to his attack on police. That officer’s body camera wasn’t turned on at the time.
Officers entered the home after they stopped receiving responses from Jones and found him dead of what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Lobley was also found dead from a gunshot wound, police said.
The incident caused significant injuries to four officers and minor injuries to five. Those involved have been released from the hospital.
“Conclusions about whether the actions of the officers are consistent with department policy and the law will not be made until all the facts are known and the investigation is complete,” Sgt. Andy Williams said in the video.
