PHOENIX – A winter storm moved through metro Phoenix on Wednesday, dropping rain across the area and a dusting of snow in higher elevations.

The activity started early in the west and north and spread east as the day progressed.

Around noon, the National Weather Service received reports of snow in Fountain Hills, Carefree and north Scottsdale.

Rain was detected throughout the Valley by midday, with the readings under .4 inches in most areas.

“The rainfall will taper off as we head to the evening hours,” Gabriel Lojero, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Phoenix, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Wednesday morning.

As of noon Wednesday, Phoenix’s high temperature for the day was 56 degrees, which was recorded just after midnight, before things cooled off into the 40s. Lojero said it might not get much warmer.

“Temperatures may struggle to reach the middle 50s given the all the cloud cover and rainfall that we expect,” he said. “And then the next couple of mornings … are going to be quite cold with temperatures in the middle to upper 30s across the Phoenix area and possibly dipping down to around freezing across some of the outlying areas outside of Phoenix.”

Phoenix temperatures are expected to creep up over the next few days — with clear skies and forecast highs of 59 degrees for Thursday and 66 for Friday — and reach the 70s on the weekend.

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Morae Jordane contributed to this report.
