PHOENIX — The Phoenix Police Department has released video of the initial ambush by a suspect who shot five officers and injured nine total during an incident last week.

Body cam footage (WARNING: Graphic content) shows the officer walking up to 36-year-old Morris Jones, who urged the unnamed officer to hurry into a residence near 51st Avenue and Broadway Road at about 2:15 a.m. Friday following a call for a woman who had been shot.

“Come on. Come on. She’s choking on her own blood. Come on, bro,” Morris said about 29-year-old Shatifah Lobley, who eventually died at a hospital.

When the officer moved closer to the house, Jones revealed a gun in his left hand and fired six shots at the policeman, who was struck multiple times.

The officer, despite injuries to his right arm, was able to run away from Morris and call for help.

“999! 999! I’ve been shot! 999!” the officer said.

Morris was eventually found dead in the home from a self-inflicted gunshot wound, but not before eight other officers sustained injuries.

After the initial incident, Lobley’s brother came out the front door carrying a baby girl. He put the baby down on the porch in a carrier and walked slowly to police.

When officers moved in to get the infant, Jones opened fire, police said. Four officers were hit directly by that gunfire, and four others were hurt by shrapnel or ricochet.

All the officers who were hospitalized, including the one seen in the body cam video, have been released from the hospital.

“He, and the remaining injured officers, have asked for privacy during their journey of healing. They appreciate the love and support from the community and the media,” Sgt. Ann Justus of the media relations unit said in press release Wednesday.
