PHOENIX – The Phoenix Police officer who spent the longest time in the hospital in the wake of a violent standoff last week has been released, the department said Wednesday.
The last hospitalized officer was the first of five officers hit by gunfire during the incident. Four others were hurt by shrapnel or ricochet.
“He, and the remaining injured officers, have asked for privacy during their journey of healing. They appreciate the love and support from the community and the media,” Sgt. Ann Justus of the media relations unit said in press release.
The suspect, 36-year-old Morris Jones, died by suicide. A woman he shot during a domestic violence altercation, 29-year-old Shatifah Lobley, also died.
Jones fired at police multiple times after they responded to a shooting call near 51st Avenue and Broadway Road around 2 a.m. Friday.
Jones invited the first responding officer to come inside and then shot at him when he approached, police said. The officer was able to retreat to safety despite being hit multiple times.
Later, Lobley’s brother came out the front door carrying a baby girl. He put the baby down on the porch in a carrier and walked slowly to police.
When officers moved in to get the infant, Jones opened fire, police said. Four officers were hit directly by that gunfire, and four others were hurt by shrapnel or ricochet.
The Phoenix SWAT team arrived and used ballistic shields to protect themselves from gunfire and rescue the 1-month-old girl, police said.
The incident ended after police used a camera to see that Jones wasn’t moving. They went inside and found Jones dead and Lobley with critical injuries. Lobley died after being taken to a hospital.
Jones and Lobley are the parents of the baby, who was unharmed, police said.
