1 person dead, another critically hurt in attempted robbery at Avondale truck stop

PHOENIX — One person is dead and another was in critical condition following an attempted robbery at an Avondale truck stop early Sunday morning, authorities said.
The incident occurred just before 5 a.m. at the Pilot Truck Stop near Interstate 10 and 99th Avenue when 19-year old Sidney Luckett attempted to rob two men, the Avondale Police Department said in a press release.
A physical struggle ensued between Luckett and one of the men when Luckett pulled out a gun and shot the victim multiple times, authorities said.
Police said an armed security guard working for the truck stop intervened and shot Luckett after the man pointed his gun at him.
Luckett was pronounced dead at the scene, authorities said, and the man who he shot was transported to the hospital in critical condition.
An investigation is ongoing and no additional information was available.
