New 4-acre lake at Heroes Regional Park in Glendale now open

Jan 15, 2022, 6:30 AM

PHOENIX — Grab those fishing poles as the new lake at Heroes Regional Park in Glendale opened on Thursday, the city announced.

The 4-acre lake broke ground in May 2021 at the park located on the northeast corner of Bethany Home Road and 83rd Avenue, according to a press release, with water being filled in last month.

People can enjoy year-round fishing at the 13-foot-deep lake, the city said, with bluegill, sunfish and catfish stocked during warm weather and rainbow trout in the winter.

The lake also has ramadas, walking paths and a waterscape fountain with lights that change colors.

“A lot of people have waited a long time for this lake to happen,” Mayor Jerry Weiers said in the release.

“I want to thank all of our council for sticking together on this because they understand the importance of giving back to our citizens.”

Heroes Park Lake is the second urban fishing lake in Glendale, the city said, with the other being at Bonsall Park on the corner of Bethany Home Road and 59th Avenue.

The city added the lake has aeration equipment to ensure water quality and aquatic habitat.

Thursday’s grand opening, which was celebrated with a ribbon-cutting ceremony, is the fruition of a longtime goal for Yucca District Councilmember Joyce Clark, the city said.

“Heroes Park Lake demonstrates the city council’s commitment to complete Heroes Park after 22 years,” Clark said in the release. “Residents will overuse and over love this latest gem in Glendale’s Park system.”

The park also has a variety of other amenities, such as a splash pad, volleyball and basketball courts, playground areas and an archery range.
