Copper Canyon High School in Glendale locked down after suspect detained, gun found

Jan 13, 2022, 2:01 PM | Updated: 5:13 pm

PHOENIX — Copper Canyon High School in Glendale was locked down Thursday after a suspect was located on campus and a gun was found after an altercation, authorities said.

The man, who was not a student, was brought to the school’s office after entering a classroom around noon, Glendale Police Sgt. Randy Stewart said in an email.

The suspect got into a verbal altercation with a student in the classroom before security was called, Stewart said.

A school resource officer searched the man and found brass knuckles in his packet and a gun inside a backpack, according to Stewart.

The man was eventually arrested after initially resisting, Stewart said.

The school, located near 91st Avenue and Camelback Road, was placed on a lockdown for about two hours as a precaution.

Police said there was no reason to believe there were outstanding suspects.

The suspect hasn’t yet been positively identified.

Earlier in the day, the Avondale Police Department announced that a student at Agua Fria High School was arrested after making threats to the school on social media.

The student admitted to making the threats, which said an attack on the school would happen Thursday, as a joke, according to police.

The student was booked into the Durango Juvenile Detention Facility on one count of making terrorist threat and one count of interference with disruption of an educational facility.
