PHOENIX – Ahead of the Republican governor’s State of the State address, Arizona Democrats released their legislative priorities for the 2022 session on Monday.

The minority party in both chambers of the Legislature unveiled a seven-point “Blueprint For a Better Arizona” that, heading into an election year, covers hot-button issues such as education, election integrity and reproductive rights.

The eight-page document also presents Democrats’ ambitions for pandemic recovery, community health, criminal justice and water/climate concerns.

“As elected leaders, we are committed to use this opportunity to protect and improve public education, and to expand justice, equity, and prosperity for all Arizonans,” the plan says.

“In the face of a pandemic that is still taking lives and impacting our economy and our most vulnerable communities, our priorities remain clear.”

The pandemic recovery section of the Democrats’ plan directly rebukes Gov. Doug Ducey, who was set to deliver his eighth and final State of the State address at 2 p.m. Monday, saying he “has abandoned Arizona to COVID-19.”

“The bottom line is this: Our caucuses are united around an agenda that invests in what matters to Arizonans, working families, and provides opportunities to all,” House Minority Leader Reginald Bolding said during a press conference outside the state Capitol.

Democrats can’t pass legislation that doesn’t have bipartisan support because Ducey’s party has a two-seat advantage in each chamber.

On the flipside, Republicans need every party member to vote yes to pass any bill that doesn’t garner Democratic support.

“Despite daunting challenges, Arizona remains a land of opportunity and boundless beauty and potential,” the Democrats’ plan says.

“Senate and House Democrats remain committed to creating an Arizona that works for everyone.”
