PHOENIX — There will be a controlled Christmas tree burning held in Goodyear on Tuesday to show the dangers of holding onto the traditional decoration for too long.

The Goodyear Fire Department will burn a dry Christmas tree to display how quickly it goes up in flames and could pose a risk in homes, according to a press release.

Fire departments across the country respond to 160 home fires each year that start with Christmas trees, according to the National Fire Protection Association.

Such fires cause an average of two deaths, 12 injuries and $10 million in property damage annually.

The burning will take place at the Goodyear Fire Training Academy on 395 E. Lower Buckeye Road, next to the Avondale Public Works building, at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, according to the release.
