Officer-involved shooting in Mesa leaves 1 person dead

PHOENIX — One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Mesa on Monday morning.
Officers said the incident occurred near the intersection of Adobe Street and Val Vista Drive.
According to Mesa police officials, a woman reported a man trespassing in her backyard.
When officers arrived around 7:30 a.m., the man ran out from the backyard and charged police carrying what was later discovered to be a large framing square, authorities said.
After attempts to subdue the man with taser and beanbag shots were thwarted, two officers opened fire.
The deceased individual was identified as 49-year-old male James M. Schild.
According to a statement, no police officers were injured.
This was the first reported police shooting in the Valley in 2022.
