PHOENIX — One person is dead following an officer-involved shooting in Mesa on Monday morning.

Officers said the incident occurred near the intersection of Adobe Street and Val Vista Drive.

According to Mesa police officials, a woman reported a man trespassing in her backyard.

When officers arrived around 7:30 a.m., the man ran out from the backyard and charged police carrying what was later discovered to be a large framing square, authorities said.

After attempts to subdue the man with taser and beanbag shots were thwarted, two officers opened fire.

The deceased individual was identified as 49-year-old male James M. Schild.

According to a statement, no police officers were injured.

This was the first reported police shooting in the Valley in 2022.
