PHOENIX – A second man has died following an apparent drive-by shooting near a Phoenix light rail station on Wednesday morning, authorities said.
A vehicle with three occupants was stopped at a red light at 19th Avenue and Camelback Road around 2:30 a.m. when somebody in another vehicle opened fire at them, hitting two men, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release.
One of the men, 27-year-old Everado Sandoval, was pronounced dead at the scene. Jorge Granados, 21, was taken to a hospital in critical condition. Granados later died of his injuries, police said Thursday.
The third man in the vehicle was uninjured.
Traffic was restricted at the busy intersection throughout the morning Wednesday while police investigated the scene, and the 19th Avenue/Camelback light rail station was closed.
Valley Metro used buses to shuttle passengers between the Seventh Avenue/Camelback and 19th Avenue/Dunlap stations for several hours. Trains eventually resumed through the investigation area, but without stopping at 19th/Camelback.
Anybody with information about the case was asked to call the Phoenix Police Department at 602-262-6151 or Silent Witness at 480-WITNESS (948-6377) or 480-TESTIGO (837-8446) for Spanish.
