PHOENIX — Valley Metro is offering free rides at night on New Year’s Eve so those who want to celebrate the end of 2021 with some adult beverages can get home safely.
People can hop on any Valley Metro bus, light rail or paratransit for free beginning at 7 p.m. on Friday.
The light rail will begin its last full trip at 2 a.m., while bus and paratransit schedules vary by route. People can view routes online or on the Valley Metro app.
“New Year’s Eve is a good time for us to provide safe rides for the people that live in and around Phoenix just because it is typically a time when people go out and they celebrate and that may involve having a drink or two,” Susan Tierney, communications manager for Valley Metro, told KTAR News 92.3 FM.
“The best way for them to get home safely is to let somebody else do the driving and we are happy to do that.”
Coors Light has sponsored the program since it began in 2013, with the brewing company providing more than 173,000 free rides in metro Phoenix during that time.
The program did not occur in 2020 as the COVID-19 pandemic forced the cancellation of many New Year’s Eve events.
Masks are required on all Valley Metro transit services.
