PHOENIX – A Buckeye police officer fatally shot a man who was fighting with his wounded father on Sunday and refused orders to drop a knife, authorities said.

Police responded to shots fired at a residence near Park Meadows Drive and Verrado Way around 3 p.m., the Buckeye Police Department said in a press release Monday morning.

The first officer to respond found two men struggling outside the home, with the adult son holding a knife while kneeling over the father, who was bleeding, police said.

The officer told the son to drop the knife and then shot him when he didn’t comply, police said. The son, who was identified by police on Tuesday as 31-year-old Vincent Black, was pronounced dead at the scene.

The father had been shot multiple times before the police arrived, police later learned. He was taken to a hospital in stable condition.

Police said they recovered a knife and handgun at the scene.

The officer who fired his weapon has been with the department for almost two years. He was placed on administrative leave, as is standard protocol.

The Glendale Police Department is investigating the shooting. When that is complete, Buckeye police will conduct an administrative investigation.

It was the first shooting of the year involving Buckeye police and 47th overall by law enforcement in the Valley, according to KTAR News 92.3 FM research.
