PHOENIX — Avondale is seeking a new city council member following a recent resignation announcement from Councilmember Pat Dennis.

Dennis,  the city’s former vice mayor, said she was leaving office Jan. 3 due to “personal reasons,” according to a press release Wednesday.

Applicants must submit their resumes and notices of interest to the city Clerk’s Office prior to 5 p.m. on Dec. 30.

Candidates qualified to replace the council member seat must be residents for at least two years preceding the date of appointment, hold no position with the city or public office and are qualified electors of Avondale, the release said.

After interviews at the end of a regularly scheduled council meeting on Jan. 24, a council member will be appointed to finish the term, which ends Dec. 31, 2024, the city said.

As part of the council, members serve four-year terms and assist in appointing the city manager and other roles.

Dennis was first elected as into the Avondale City Council in 2016 as a member prior to being appointed in January 2019 to vice mayor for a two-year term.

She previously served on the Avondale Parks, Recreation and Libraries Advisory Board, the Avondale Municipal Arts Committee and as President of the Southwest Lending Closet.

“Pat Dennis has answered the call to public service for many years, first as a council member in the city of Peoria, and in Avondale for the past five years,” Mayor Kenn Weise said in the release.

“Her impact on this community cannot be overlooked. We are grateful for her service and she will be sorely missed.”

We want to hear from you.
