Police seek witnesses after motorcycle officer hurt by rock on Mesa freeway

PHOENIX – Police in the East Valley are seeking witnesses after a Tempe motorcycle officer was injured by a rock Thursday night while riding on a Mesa freeway.
The officer was hit in the helmet and shoulder by the object while riding westbound on the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway approaching the McKellips Road overpass around 7:20 p.m., the Mesa Police Department said in a press release Friday.
The six-year veteran, who was heading home from work on a marked Tempe police motorcycle, almost crashed but was able to pull over and radio for help.
The officer was treated at a hospital and released to recover at home.
“Situations such as these are extremely dangerous,” Mesa Detective Richard Encinas said in the release.
“Throwing objects at any moving vehicle can result in serious injury or death. Help us keep our community safe by reaching out with any information you may have.”
