First phase of Monterey Park in Mesa complete, open to public

Dec 19, 2021, 5:45 AM | Updated: 6:22 pm

PHOENIX — Mesa city officials and local children recently celebrated the completion of the first phase of the Monterey Park expansion now open to the community.

The playground — funded through the voter-approved 2018 Parks Bond — located on Guadalupe and Power roads provides improved access and includes a range of ADA-compliant features.

Families will find climbing ropes, two transfer stations, a roller slide and tic-tac-toe at the new site, according to a press release.

When completed, the park is expected to include youth diamond fields, four pickleball courts and a mini library.

Construction to double the park’s size is set to begin next fall with a completion date set for fall 2023, officials said.

When the city was seeking design ideas, it chose to seek community input through social media, the city’s website and flyers. In turn, Mesa received more than 130 responses, the release said.

“It was very important to get residents’ feedback about what they wanted the Monterey Park playground to look like, and those comments were incorporated into the final design,” Kevin Thompson, District 6 councilmember, said in a press release.

“I’m happy to say it was a very successful process and demonstrated a high level of community interest in the park.”

The park will also feature diggers and fossils in the sand play area, a netplay structure with a slide and swings that’ll accommodate toddlers and older children.

Mesa Mayor John Giles called the park an asset to the community and added that he is looking “forward to the completion of the additional fields and other amenities.”
