PHOENIX – A car fire Tuesday night at a north Phoenix gas station appears to have started when a man intentionally lit himself on fire, authorities said.
Crews initially responded to a call about a car fire extending to gas pumps outside a Circle K at Happy Valley Road and 19th Avenue around 8:30 p.m., the Phoenix Fire Department said in a press release.
The first responders found that the pumps weren’t affected and quickly put out the blaze, according to the release.
But a 21-year-old man suffered critical burn injuries and was taken by ambulance to a local burn center.
Authorities said early reports indicate the blaze may have been caused by the man lighting himself on fire.
Bystanders used fire extinguishers to help put out the flames.
No other information was immediately available.
