PHOENIX – Police in Scottsdale said Tuesday a young man who has been missing for months has died.
Remains later identified as those of Najib “Jubi” Monsif, 20, were found at a canal pump station near Power Road and the Loop 202 Red Mountain Freeway in Mesa on Dec. 7, the Scottsdale Police Department said in a press conference. There were no signs of foul play.
“We are heartbroken at the development of this case, it is not the outcome anyone in our community was hoping for,” Aaron Bolin, a public information officer with the department, said.
“We all hoped Jubi would be found alive in good health and be able to be reunited with family and friends.”
Monsif, who had autism and was believed to have the mental capacity of an 8-year-old, was reported missing Sept. 23. He was last seen at home near Frank Lloyd Wright Boulevard and Via Linda.
A Silver Alert went into effect immediately.
Police, the Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office, the FBI and the Central Arizona Project combined resources to run searches, the department said.
Tracking dogs, air units and drones were mobilized, the department said, along with authorities on foot, bike and horseback combing the desert areas and the surrounding neighborhood for weeks.
John Heinzelman, a detective with the department, said it is theorized Monsif went into the canal within the first few hours of going missing, adding there was no evidence of him being anywhere else.
Heinzelman also said Monsif had told some family members prior to going missing that he would never see them again or that he would miss them. He didn’t elaborate any further.
Monsif’s remains needed forensic efforts for a positive identification, Heinzelman said.
