PHOENIX – Low-cost carrier Allegiant Air has added two more routes to metro Phoenix starting next year, with travel to and from cities in Tennessee and Ohio.
Nonstop flights between Phoenix Sky Harbor Airport and Knoxville, Tennessee, will take off twice a week beginning Feb. 16; Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport will start offering twice-weekly service to Toledo, Ohio, on March 9, the airline announced Tuesday.
“These routes will connect our customers to premier destinations in Arizona … just in time for spring break,” Allegiant executive Drew Wells said in a press release.
The Las Vegas-based airline has added Valley nonstop service to a wide range of regions since August, including Orange County, California; Minneapolis; Pittsburgh; Spokane, Washington; and Tulsa, Oklahoma.
Allegiant plans more expansion – setting its sights on Mexico. The company and Viva Aerobus said recently they will seek antitrust immunity from the U.S. and Mexican governments to form an alliance that will include working together on setting schedules and routes across the border.
Allegiant said it will invest $50 million in the Mexican carrier as part of the deal, which it said was the first of its kind involving two ultra-low-cost airlines.
The airlines said they expect to begin flights under the alliance in the first quarter of 2023, pending approvals from the U.S. Transportation Department and Mexico’s Federal Economic Competition Commission.
