PHOENIX — A 15-year-old boy was arrested Tuesday in the shooting of a 16-year-old boy following a gun sale gone wrong at Cesar Chavez High School in Phoenix, police said.

The 15-year-old is accused of shooting the 16-year-old at the school at about 3 p.m. Monday after the older boy realized money given to him during the sale of the gun was fake, Sgt. Ann Justus said during a press conference.

The shooting occurred outside of a bathroom where the sale happened, Justus said.

“As soon as the 16-year-old realized the money wasn’t real, he confronted the 15-year-old,” Justus said. “That’s when the altercation occurred and the 16-year-old was shot.”

Both kids involved were students at the high school located near Baseline Road and 41st Avenue, according to Justus.

The 16-year-old is facing charges after recovering from non-life-threatening injuries, Justus said.

The 15-year-old suspect was booked into a juvenile detention center on charges of endangerment, aggravated assault, weapons violations and more.

The weapon hasn’t been recovered and is believed to be a ghost gun, meaning it was assembled from parts bought online so that it could be untraceable.

An investigation into the incident is ongoing.
