PHOENIX — A wrong-way collision on a Phoenix freeway early Saturday involved four vehicles and killed the wrong-way driver, the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

The crash occurred at about 3 a.m., closing eastbound lanes of the Loop 101 at Interstate 17 for about six hours, the DPS said.

According to the DPS, the wrong-way vehicle was traveling westbound in eastbound lanes when it collided head-on with a second vehicle.

A third vehicle then struck the second vehicle, and debris from the secondary collision then damaged a fourth vehicle belonging to a witness already at the scene, the DPS said.

In addition to the wrong-way driver who was killed, the drivers of the second and third vehicles suffered injuries that were serious but not life-threatening, the DPS said.

No identities were released.
