Swarm of cicadas attack news reporter while filming

Jun 12, 2015, 9:00 AM | Updated: 9:00 am

Cicadas are nasty.

Just ask news reporter Katya Leick: She was attacked by a swarm of them while trying to film an on-air report Tuesday. The bugs kept coming at the Topeka, Kansas reporter kamikaze-style, with one even landing on her face.

For those who don’t know what a cicada is, consider yourself lucky. They are insects that live in tropical climates and emit a loud, cricket-like mating call.

The most well-known cicada species in North America is the Magicicada, which emerge from the ground every 13 to 17 years to reproduce.

While they are not a threat to humans, cicadas are nasty. They make a lot of noise, take over trees and other greenery and shed their skin, leaving hundreds of cicada corpses for you to endlessly crunch on.

Although it is well-known that the bugs make their home in the East Coast, they do also live in the Valley and come out for a couple weeks during monsoon season.

Happy swatting!
