PHOENIX — Anywhere there’s a turkey and pumpkin pie with loved ones to share it with is a good place to be on Thanksgiving, but some cities rise above the rest to celebrate the holiday.

A personal finance website ranked the best cities in the nation to be for Thanksgiving, and two East Valley cities were among the top 15.

Scottsdale came in at No. 3 and Gilbert placed No. 11 in WalletHub’s comparison of the 100 most populated U.S. cities.

The cities were compared across five key dimensions: Thanksgiving celebrations and traditions, affordability, safety and accessibility, giving thanks and Thanksgiving weather forecast.

Scottsdale was among the top 10 for Thanksgiving celebrations and traditions as well as affordability, while Gilbert was No. 2 in giving thanks with subcategories that included volunteer opportunities and hours per capita.

Chandler wasn’t far behind at No. 17, followed by Mesa (No. 43), Glendale (No. 65), Phoenix (No. 71) and Tucson (No. 72).

Mesa and Tucson were ranked lower due to having among the lowest number of holiday decoration shops per capita, while Phoenix lost points for being second-to-last in the number of Thanksgiving events per capita.

Tucson did get some points back for being tied for first with five other cities in having the highest number of pumpkin patches per capita.

Atlanta was determined to be the best place in the nation to spend Thanksgiving, while San Bernardino was ranked the worst.
