Arizona man found guilty for threatening to kill House Speaker Nancy Pelosi

Nov 21, 2021, 12:00 PM

PHOENIX — The U.S. Attorney’s Office in Arizona said a Bullhead City man on Thursday was found guilty for threatening to kill Speaker of the House Nancy Pelosi.

Steven A. Martis, 77, was charged with one count of communicating an interstate threat to kill or him Pelosi, according to a statement released Friday.

Authorities said on January 17, Martis left two voicemails to Pelosi from his Bullhead City home.

He left messages that threatened, “I’m coming to kill you…” and “You’re dead…” according to the statement.

The voicemails followed a warning from the Federal Bureau of Investigation about similar calls made in the past, the statement said.

“This case is an important reminder that, although the First Amendment protects our rights to free speech, which is one of our most precious individual rights, the United States Attorney’s Office takes threats to kill or harm another individual through a phone call or other form of interstate communications very seriously,” Acting United States Attorney Glenn B. McCormick said in the statement.

The FBI conducted the investigation along with the United States Capitol Police.
