PHOENIX — Tempe officials are adding 15 apartments and homes to its list of permanently affordable rental housing units for individuals and families in the area.

The additional apartments and homes will bring the total numbers of affordable housing units in Tempe to 100, as the city hopes to ensure there is a variety of housing types for those seeking to live there.

The units range from small apartments to large 5-bedroom homes, according to a press release.

“I’m so proud of what we’ve been able to accomplish so far through the Hometown for All initiative,” Mayor Corey Woods said in the release.

“Whether purchasing an apartment complex, buying land to create new homeownership options or partnering with a developer to bring more affordable and workforce housing to Tempe,  these actions mean more individuals and families who want to call Tempe home have that opportunity.”

Funds used through the Hometown for All initiative — approved in January —  go toward buying and rehabilitating properties, developing city-owned land and partnering with developers or nonprofits to build affordable or workforce units, according to the release.

Under the program, 50% of certain permitting fees paid to the city by developers would be directed to The Affiliate, a nonprofit affiliated with the city’s Public Housing Authority.
