PHOENIX – Officials held a groundbreaking ceremony Wednesday for a three-residence affordable housing project in the West Valley.

The construction is a partnership among the city of Avondale, Maricopa County, H&B Builders, Architectural Resource Team and Trellis, a community housing development organization.

“We are thrilled that through this collaboration, in just a few short months, three families will have the stability, security and sense of community that comes with homeownership,” Jacqueline Edwards, director for Maricopa County Human Services, said in a press release.

The houses on the northwest corner of Elwood Street and El Mirage Road in Avondale are projected to be move-in ready by next summer.

“Avondale is a community that seeks to provide a wide range of housing options for our residents,” Avondale Mayor Kenn Weise said in the release.

“This includes workforce housing to meet the needs of our young families.”

They will be sold to qualifying low- to moderate-income buyers. The maximum annual income for a family of four is set at $63,200.

Trellis will offer homebuyer counseling to prospective purchasers, and down payment assistance for qualified first-time buyers.

The homes were designed to be energy efficient to keep expensed down, with Wi-Fi capable switches and outlets to allowing the owners to closely monitor water usage and energy consumption.

“Trellis is not just a typical affordable homebuilder; we build our homes to be future-proof, environmentally friendly, and technologically advanced,” Glenn Karlson, Trellis director of real estate development, said in the release.

“Our overall goal is to help bring a high-quality home to the market that also lives comfortably and sustainably.”
