PHOENIX – MotorTrend’s best car of 2022 is produced right here in Arizona.
The Lucid Air, a groundbreaking electric vehicle built in Casa Grande, was named car of the year in the magazine’s prestigious annual awards.
“Earning this coveted distinction for Lucid Air, our very first car, is a resounding endorsement of our ability to deliver the most advanced electric vehicles in the world,” Peter Rawlinson, Lucid Group CEO/CTO, said in a press release.
“Our objective of achieving range through efficiency and technical innovation is crystallized in Lucid Air, and we’re elated that this effort has been recognized by MotorTrend against such formidable competition from well-established automakers.”
It wasn’t just the Air’s unrivaled combination of range and power that earned the coveted golden calipers trophy.
“Anyone can buy big numbers by installing giant motors and batteries,” MotorTrend wrote.
“Rather, it’s the sophisticated way Lucid achieves them in a package that ranks highly in each of our six key criteria that captured our attention and our calipers.”
The award-wining sedan comes in four models with starting prices ranging from $77,400 to $169,000. Lucid said it has taken orders on more than 17,000 cars.
The top options are the only electric vehicles on the commercial market that can run for more than 500 miles on a single charge.
California-based Lucid selected Casa Grande for its factory in 2016. The first cars started rolling off the assembly line in September.
The nearly 1 million-square-foot facility is the first greenfield, dedicated electric vehicle factory to be built in North America.
The company also embarked on a 2.85 million-square-foot expansion to the facility to support additional production, including of the Lucid Gravity SUV beginning in 2023.
