PHOENIX – In a national opinion piece published Thursday, Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey accused President Joe Biden of turning his back on the state after it helped him get elected last year.

And he suggested Arizonans could turn their backs on the president come 2024.

“After succeeding in 2020, you’d think President Biden would be working overtime to keep the state in the blue column. But less than a year into his administration, his record shows the opposite,” Ducey, chairman of the Republican Governors Association, wrote in the Wall Street Journal.

“If anything, Mr. Biden has inexplicably gone out of his way to antagonize, alienate and frustrate us here in the Grand Canyon State.”

Ducey’s disagreements with the current administration are well documented. His column covers a litany of critiques, starting with the border situation.

“What’s happening at the border isn’t a case of benign neglect. Criminal negligence is more like it, and Arizonans are paying a huge price,” Ducey wrote.

He follows up by taking on the administration’s handling of education, forest management and workplace safety regulations in relation to Arizona.

“These aren’t theoretical issues. Real people — parents, students, small-business people, property owners, ranchers — are negatively affected by steps the Biden administration is taking,” Ducey wrote.

Biden narrowly won Arizona’s 11 electoral votes in 2020, becoming the first Democrat to take the state since Bill Clinton in 1996, on his way to winning the White House.

Ducey warned that the state will swing back to the Republican side in the next presidential election if Biden doesn’t change his approach.

“If you want to know why the president’s poll numbers are tanking, look at Arizona,” he wrote. “We’re a case study in how active hostility from the Washington ruling class is alienating real people. Unless this changes, you can take Arizona out of the Democratic column in 2024.”

We want to hear from you.
