PHOENIX — A new $70 million aircraft service center is coming to Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport, its developer announced Tuesday.

Gulfstream Aerospace Corporation will construct the 225,000-square-foot maintenance, repair and overhaul facility that will include hangar space, back shops and offices, according to a press release.

The facility is expected to open in 2023.

“Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport is an ideal location for Gulfstream’s newest MRO facility,” Derek Zimmerman, Gulfstream Customer Support president, said in the release.

“Not only is it an established airport for business aviation operators, its infrastructure and size provide a great location for both Gulfstream and our customers.”

The center, the largest private investment in the history of the airport, will be designed with sustainable operations in mind.

The fuel farm will have a dedicated sustainable aviation fuel supply and a white roof to reflect heat.

Gulfstream is also working with the airport authority to install solar panels and use green power, according to the release.

Workforce development partnerships with Arizona State University and nearby Chandler-Gilbert Community College will provide a pathway for jobs in the aerospace sector.

“The arrival of Gulfstream is further proof that Gateway Airport is one of the best locations in North America for MRO and other aerospace facilities,” John Giles, Mesa mayor and chairman of the Phoenix-Mesa Gateway Airport Authority, said in the release.

“The hundreds of high-wage jobs and educational partnerships that will be generated with this facility will have a profound impact on the entire region.”

Gulfstream has recently expanded in in Savannah, Georgia; Van Nuys, California; Fort Worth, Texas; Palm Beach, Florida; Appleton, Wisconsin; and Farnborough, England.

Gateway Airport serves five commercial airlines that offers nonstop service to more than 60 domestic and international destinations.

“We are thrilled Gulfstream has chosen Mesa for their sustainable Customer Support facility,” Gov. Doug Ducey said in the release. “By opening this facility, Gulfstream is coming to a state with a long and storied history with aviation.”
