PHOENIX — The Arizona State Fair set an attendance record with nearly 1.6 million visitors in its return this year, a Chicago-based deep-dish pizzeria plans to open its 6th Valley location soon and Chandler put up new signage as part of a branding effort.
Here are some of the biggest stories that headlined the Arizona news cycle over the weekend.
2021 Arizona State Fair sets attendance record with nearly 1.6 million visitors
Arizona State Fair enthusiasts returned to the annual event in record fashion in 2021 after a one-year hiatus due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Almost 1.6 million visitors took in the sights, smells and thrills of the fair, which opened Oct. 1 and ended Oct. 30 at the fairgrounds located at 19th Avenue and McDowell Road.
The previous record of 1.3 million fairgoers was set in 2019, according to a press release.
The 2021 event spanned 22 days compared to 18 in 2019 and previous years. The record number of guests was set in the 17th day in 2021.
Lou Malnati’s Pizzeria announces 6th Valley location to open in Gilbert in winter 2021
Chicago-based deep dish pizzeria Lou Malnati’s announced Friday it will make Gilbert home to its sixth Valley location.
The 1,800 square-foot space at Pecos Road and Val Vista Drive is slated to open by the end of the year and is projected to employ 50 workers, the company said in a press release.
The location won’t include a dining room, but will offer carryout and delivery options.
Malnati’s anticipates hiring for positions, including delivery drivers, kitchen crew and phone staff.
City puts up new signage as part of West Chandler branding effort
In an effort to build a strong brand identity, city officials announced Wednesday the installation of seven, 15-foot signs that read “West Chandler” near major intersections throughout the area.
The installations were placed in an area that is home to more than 630 businesses which employ more than 29,000 workers and is part of an effort to strengthen West Chandler’s image, according to a press release.
Officials expect two more signs to be installed.
“When you enter West Chandler, we want you to know that you are in an important part of our community,” Chandler Mayor Kevin Hartke said.
“When you hear the name ‘West Chandler,’ we want you to envision a vibrant and dynamic employment corridor.”
Dapper & Stout Coffee Company opens 3rd location in Phoenix
Coffee fans rejoice, Dapper & Stout Coffee company is opening its third Valley location in Uptown Plaza near the corner of Camelback Road and Central Avenue.
“We make very strategic moves with our growth, and we think Uptown Plaza is the perfect place for our third location,” Owner Aaron Lopo said in a release.
Dapper & Stout offers a wide array of coffee, espresso, cocktails and quick bites.
It is open from 6:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on Sunday through Thursday and 6:00 am to 10:00 p.m. on Friday and Saturday with a three-hour happy hour from 3:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m.
Man arrested for firing at police responding to domestic violence incident
Phoenix police have arrested a 28-year-old man after being called to a domestic violence incident that resulted in a patrol vehicle being struck with a bullet.
According to a release, police responded to the area near 67th Avenue and Camelback Road and learned that a man had fired several gunshots into the air.
Police said that the suspect fired multiple shots in their direction with one of the shots hitting a patrol vehicle.
The man was taken into custody with “less than lethal force” and brought to a hospital for injuries.
