PHOENIX — The city of Phoenix announced Thursday the launch of its backyard garden program, where some Valley residents can partake in a year-long commitment to grow healthy food from the comfort of their own home.
Through the free program — which will accept up to 90 applicants — the city aims for residents to improve health, promote physical activity, lessen food insecurity and hunger, as well as their food budget, according to the website.
Participants will choose between one of three garden systems, including the aquaponics system, Lehr garden or the tradition raised bed, and receive education and training support for 12 months.
To qualify, residents must live in Phoenix within the boundaries of the following urban villages: Estrella, Laveen, Maryvale and South Mountain.
They must also be homeowners or renters, with permission from the landlord to participate in the program and meet income requirements.
Further, priority will be given to those residing in or close to food deserts within designated project areas.
Applications are due by the end of the day on Nov. 15.
Participants are expected to pay for water and electricity as required for the garden system and take part in data collection.
